Kids: Growing up strong!!!
It appears the Mitchell Report has again brought Congressional attention to the use of steroids amongst our children. The growing trend has been linked to the aspirational role professional athletes play in the lives of children and adolescents. At what point though does a 16 year old say, "Wow! Bonds sure is hitting well this year - must be steroids. Think I'll see about getting me some." So basically Congress and its brilliant panel of experts have deduced that young people of America have inside information, unbeknown to MLB investigators, reporters, and coaches - detailing the chemicals used to enhance athletic performance.
Are we to assume that all youth who partake in the joys of steroid use do so for athletic performance? I tend to believe most steroid use is driven by the same superficial beauty that fueled "look good" drugs like Mini-Thins and Trim Spa. No person in the instant-this-instant-that world of today want to take the time to learn the intricate nutritional balance required to maintain a muscular physique or spend the hours in and out of the gym lifting and recovering.
Let's face it, professional athletes are the least of the worries facing the over-inflated problems with our youth and steroids. If I recall there are "other" drugs destroying America's youth far more dangerous than steroids.
